![]() Fikry (based on a book) on Hulu and it was so heartwarming. I recently watched The Storied Life of A.J. I wouldn’t not recommend either, but there are other classics that are classics for a reason. Both were … cute and fine I personally liked Your Place Or Mine more for its classic-rom-com-ness - Somebody I Used to Know leans heavily into the awkward side of romance which can be cringe to some. Besides that go-to, Z and I just watched two new 2023 rom-coms, Somebody I Used to Know, starring Alison Brie, written and directed by her husband, Dave Franco, on Amazon, and Your Place Or Mine starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher on Netflix. My main pick and go-to recent rom-com favorite is Palm Springs (2020), which was in the tournament, but didn’t last long because I think Zack and I were the only ones who watched it. I might be late to this party but wow what a quality love story between Leo Campo and Nikki Angioli, "the respective son and daughter of rival New York pizzeria owners.” Amazing. Maybe it's my soft spot for pizzarias but family drama, Italian Grandmas, and forbidden love? It's Romeo and Juliet but with a lot of garlic. It has a 13% on Rotten Tomatoes but there is something about the campiness of this movie that really struck a chord. The plot was sweet but I don't know if I would recommend it and not going to rewatch it anytime soon.Ī movie I would recommend is the 2018 film Little Italy with Hayden Christensen and Emma Roberts. It felt a little too fantastical without much explanation or background. Recently I watched the newest Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson Rom-Com Marry Me which was extra cheesy yet did not buy their chemistry at all. They are all bangers and deserve to go down in rom-com hall of fame. I will ALWAYS shout out The Proposal, Two Weeks Notice, The Sweetest Thing, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding. If you want a low stakes watch on Netflix, I'd recommend it. It was cute, but a little bit lackluster. That's streaming on HBO Max, if you're interested! But I guess the most recent rom-com-esque movie that I watched for the first time was Look Both Ways starring Lili Reinhart. I did end up watching You've Got Mail this week after writing about it because I simply couldn't resist. A plausible fairytale with a little extra magic dust. It's nice to watch a character look down the barrel of their current life choices and see what awaits them. It makes you believe in second chances and also is a big Anti Bullying PSA. This movie is mostly a love letter to yourself and really centered around the main character's personal journey with a rediscovered love subplot. ![]() It has an infamous dance scene, Polly Pocket business attire, loveable characters, spells, intriguing friendship dynamics, a hilarious flashmob. This is one of the most classic films of the genre. ![]() A love story rooted in childhood friendship, an evil best friend, a "glow-up", some fun inside jokes, and happily ever after! I'm also going to be recreating this for my 30th birthday because I'm basic as hell. Honestly my vote was for Pretty Woman, but 13 Going on 30 is fantastic so I really can't complain! I think it has what every good rom-com needs. What's not to love?! I'm also very tempted to do a 13 Going on 30 birthday party when I turn 30, either where everyone dresses like they did at age 13 OR where everyone dresses like the Six Chicks (lol). ![]() It has an amazing soundtrack, a really fun premise, and a fantastic cast. 13 Going on 30 is truly a great movie that I enjoy all the way through each time I watch it. ![]()
